SC Ports Authority to consider Upstate inland port

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The State Ports Authority plans a special meeting to consider a contract that could lead to an inland port possibly somewhere in the Upstate.

The authority wouldn't share the possible location of the South Carolina Inland Port with The Post and Courier of Charleston. The meeting to discuss the plan is set for Monday.

The inland port would be a terminal where shipping containers can be transferred between trucks and trains at a facility hundreds of miles from the shore.

The authority does own more than 800 acres of land near the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, Interstate 85 and the BMW plant.

An inland port for South Carolina has been studied several times, with locations ranging from Orangeburg to the Upstate.
