CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One local nonprofit is offering seniors relief from the summer heat.
Project Cool Breeze, founded by Rep. Wendell Gilliard, handed out 100 air conditioning units Monday at Lowe's home improvement store in West Ashley.
Gilliard stressed the importance of helping seniors through the extreme heat we've had this summer during Monday's event.
"One senior actually took me aside, and she started crying, believe it or not," Gilliard said. "She told me that her house was so hot she had to go sit in the library, go sit in office buildings, ya know? Our seniors are actually doing these things as to stay cool."
Project Cool Breeze has been giving fans and air conditioners to senior citizens throughout the Tricounty area for 13 years.
The organization plans to give out another 125 air conditioners July 21 during their largest distribution of the year at Brittlebank Park.
