Fight illiteracy; Take a book to a local business

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Want to make a difference in a child's life? Give them the gift of reading!

Charleston Young Professionals (CYP), an initiative of Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, is putting on a Tower of Success Book Drive to collect books for elementary-aged children. Donations of new or gently-used books will help the Charleston metro area and the fight against illiteracy by giving books to children that need them the most.

Donations will allow children to have the proper materials in order to further their education and encourage a desire for learning. Organizers say it is especially important for children to continue reading throughout the summer in order to continue their learning.

The 2012 campaign began this month and concludes early September.

Local area businesses will serve as donation drop-off points across the Charleston area. Books can be dropped off at any of the following:

CresCom Bank – all locations in Charleston, Morris Financial Concepts Inc, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Buist, Byars & Taylor LLC, Ramsdale Law Firm, Center for Women, Charleston Southern University, Sparc and Holiday Inn and Suites in North Charleston. The books will be distributed to local schools and organizations that support the advancement of literacy rates in the Charleston region including Charleston Volunteers for Literacy, Teachers Supply Closet, Be a Mentor Charleston, Bridge of Hope and Metanoia.
