NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A plane towing an advertising banner has crashed just off shore at North Myrtle Beach, and witnesses say the pilot jumped to safety just before the aircraft hit the water.

North Myrtle Beach spokesman Pat Dowling said the plane went down in the ocean around noon Wednesday.

Witnesses say a banana boat driver in the area picked up the pilot and took him back to shore. Authorities say he was not seriously injured and no one else was hurt.

A boat is monitoring the plane until its owner can remove it from the water. Dowling wasn't sure which company was operating the aircraft.
