Thousands in Lowcountry left without power after storm

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Rain, wind and lightning are to blame for what left at least 6,000 households in the Lowcountry without power Friday evening.

The exact cause is under investigation, but the most severe cluster of outages was centered around the Summerville area -- an area ABC News 4 meteorologist Dave Williams said was victim to several hundred lightning strikes.

SCE&G expects to restore power to customers by midnight.

Berkeley Electric Company confirmed about 2,000 customers were without power as of 7 p.m. Officials with the company could not provide an estimate on when power would be restored.
