WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) – The front porch of the Lowcountry is getting closer to having alcohol sales on Sunday. Walterboro City Council will vote on the final reading at Tuesday's meeting.

"I am pretty confident that council will vote to put the referendum," Mayor Bill Young said.

According to Mayor Young, local businesses submitted letters in May to the Economic Development Commission with their concerns.

"A lot of them were hearing complaints from customers," he said. "They believe it would be beneficial to have the alcohol sales on Sunday."

One of those businesses is Ruby Tuesday, located right off I-95. General Manager, Walker Purcell says he loses about 30 to 50 customers every Sunday because they are not permitted to serve alcohol.

"They go from telling us off to just walking out the door and saying they'll never return to this town," he said.

Purcell said many of the businesses in the community echo his experience, including hotels.

"Not only does it turn customers away from our restaurant but also turns potential visitors away from hotels because they're not going to stay on a Sunday because they can't get a drink with their meal."

He says most of his patrons are passing through on the interstate heading to Florida or on their way north. He said nearby cities, St. George and Yemassee are only 20 miles away and folks are willing to drive the distance.

"The more sales we do the more people we can hire within the city," Purcell said. "It will just be good for the city."

If city council approves the second reading, the referendum will be put on the November 6 ballot.
