CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the South Carolina Department of Revenue have announced two arrests in connection to an income tax refund fraud investigation.
Trevor Alston of Mount Pleasant and Aubrey German of Huger were arrested Tuesday morning for separate counts of assisting in the preparation of a false return and forgery.
Investigators say a review of Trevor Alston's 2009 tax return revealed that the subject submitted via a tax preparer a fraudulent W2 form. They say he inflated the wages and withholding information. Officials with the Department of Revenue say the use of the fraudulent W2 form resulted in Alston, 23, receiving federal and SC income tax refunds of $4,954 and $618, respectively, to which he was not entitled.
Alston is facing charges of up to $500 in fines and/or 15 years in jail if convicted of the two charges.
The SCDOR argues that Aubrey German's 2008 income tax returns were prepared and submitted containing a W2 form in which German, 28, had inflated the wages and withholding information, thus receiving fraudulent federal and state tax refunds in the amounts of $3,720 and $620, respectively. If convicted of the charges, German could face up to $500 in fines and/or 10 years in prison.
These arrests follow an ongoing SCDOR investigation in which now 11 arrests in the Charleston area have been conducted in the past weeks.
