ACLU showing movie about interracial couple

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Civil liberties advocates in South Carolina are showing a movie that chronicles an interracial couple's struggle to live their life together in the American South under Jim Crow.

The American Civil Liberties Union is holding a screening of "The Loving Story" at the College of Charleston on Thursday.

The film details the story of an interracial married couple and their nine-year struggle to live in Virginia.

Richard Loving, a white bricklayer from Virginia, defied stereotypes and centuries of racist laws when he married Mildred Jeter, who was black and American Indian. Convicted of violating a law against interracial marriage, the Lovings fought for their rights and won a landmark 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case that struck down such bans nationwide.

"The Loving Story" premiered earlier this year on HBO.
