CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston woman is the first person to test positive for West Nile Virus in the state so far this year.
According to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, the woman tested positive for the virus after she donated blood.
The disease is transmitted to humans through a bite from an infected mosquito, according to a press release from DHEC.
People bitten by an infected mosquito may experience flu-like symptoms within 2 to 14 days, have a fever, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and occasionally nausea and vomiting. Often they experience sensitivity to light and inflammation of the eyelids. Some may also get a rash.
According to DHEC, the woman is recovering from the illness.
