MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) – Aloha Dwyer looks forward to coming to the Senior Center. It's become part of her daily routine. On Friday afternoon, she felt fortunate to get her favorite machine in the exercise room.
"I've come in the morning and had to wait as much as an hour to get on a machine," she said. "I understand when we get the new addition we will have more equipment and won't have as long of a wait."
In May, Mount Pleasant Town Council approved $1.6 million expansion plans for the center. This would allow the current 7,800 square foot center to double in size.
Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, which the center is named after, says the project still requires funding.
"The funds that have been appropriated are for the actual construction of the building, the bricks and mortar," she said. "The funds we are trying to raise we are short by $215,000 which would be appropriated to up fitting the building, once it's been constructed."
This money will allow for more furniture and cardio equipment and other miscellaneous needs. Stokes-Marshall says she has appealed to the 2,200 members for their help.
"We are going beyond that out in the community where members of the town staff will be soliciting the various business organizations, developers, bankers whoever or whatever businesses that would be willing to contribute," she said.
The goal is to raise the funds by this October, which would be the four year anniversary. Stokes–Marshall hopes the groundbreaking will be at that point to start the 18 month construction.
