MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - Port officials say it could be months before damaged cranes at a South Carolina port are back in service.
The cranes were damaged during a thunderstorm Saturday at the Wando Terminal in Mount Pleasant. The storm spun off a microburst with winds estimated at up to 70 miles per hour.
The storm pushed a 1,500-ton crane mounted on rails along the dock. The first crane then hit three smaller cranes. In addition, 74 shipping containers were also damaged. Nineteen were loaded with cargo
State Ports Authority spokeswoman Allison Skipper said the temporary loss of the cranes should not affect the ability to dock ships at the terminal. But she said it will mean using seven cranes instead of 11 for loading and unloading operations.
Evangelist Franklin Graham prayed on a sidewalk outside the Pentagon Thursday after his invitation to a prayer service inside was withdrawn because of comments that insulted people of other religions. More>>
