HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCIV) -- Chryse Jackson keeps busy raising her three kids and working on a major undertaking, building a school from scratch.

Jackson, along with other Hollywood parents, has been working for nearly a year on launching a new charter school -- the Lowcountry Leadership Charter School or LLCS.

"A few parents got together and said we've heard about this thing called a charter school. It sounds pretty innovative where we'd have the opportunity to make a lot of our own decisions," Jackson said.

Jackson, whose children currently attend private school, says parents need more options for providing their kids with certain schooling.

"Charter schools are allowed the freedom to be more innovative when it comes to teaching, the curriculum and how teachers are allowed to teach children," she said. "Ours is developing leaders through project-based learning -- a teaching model of curriculum and it basically takes the children out of the classroom and into the community where they can learn skills in the community and bring it back to the classroom."

LLCS will start the 2013-2014 school year with 400 kids, grades kindergarten through ninth, adding a high school grade level every year. Jackson says they don't have a property yet but are currently in negotiations and expect the school to be in Hollywood.

"I love this area. I wouldn't leave it for anything, and so many families are having to travel for hours a day for children to go to a school that meets their needs. They're looking for a choice. They're looking for innovation," she said.

Jackson says she hopes their school will provide that innovation. The enrollment application period will begin on November 1st -- a 45-day period where anyone interested in attending the school can submit an application.

If the applications received during the enrollment period exceed the space allowable for each grade, a lottery will take place. Jackson says they expect to begin hiring teachers and staff in the next few months.
