MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Volunteering at Patriots Point is personal for Arch Schmitt. He served on the ship during the Vietnam War. Now, Schmitt is proud to see plans for a $100 million Medal of Honor museum to be built at Patriots Point.

"(Volunteering) it's really therapy for my PTSD. I come out on Saturdays and spend as much time as I can," Schmitt said.

Patriots Point officials have partnered with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to build a modern-day Medal of Honor museum, conference center, hotel, restaurant, shopping center and wedding pavilion.

"It will mean that Patriots Point will become an attraction for the nation, not just a place to see. It will be a destination for the country to visit," said Ray Chandler, chairman of Patriots Point Development Authority.

Many feel the complex will put Charleston on the map for being a military destination.

"I really think it makes an international city," said James Livingston, a Medal of Honor recipient. "This scales things up very significantly because a lot of people, just like they go to see the Smithsonian in Washington, will want to come to see this."

Officials hope the facility will lure 200,000 tourists and visitors a year and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

"It's really an opportunity to look at the legacy of the Medal of Honor and also look at the legacy of all our veterans' service," Livingston said. "And, no better place to have that than here in Charleston, S.C. where the Civil War began."

The CMOH Museum will sit on 10-12 acres of land.

Patriots Point officials have also set aside $2 million over the next 5 years to renovate the Yorktown. Museum animators from Universal Studios will take part in the design.
