NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Rev. Jesse Jackson held an emergency press conference at a local movie theatre Thursday.
Jackson and the Rainbow Push Coalition were at the Regal Charles Towne Square movie theatre to discuss the potential ban of assault weapons. They were joined by local lawmakers.
As they discussed the proposed ban, they mentioned the recent deadly shooting at an Aurora, Colorado movie theatre. Jackson described the rise of violence and use of assault weapons as one of the biggest threats to democracy. He called for lawmakers to take action.
"This is a matter of national security," Jackson told those in attendance. "We must end domestic terrorism. This is not just this incident, this is a pattern. It's Aurora. It's Columbine. It's Virginia Tech. The numbers are increasing."
As a side note, Jackson said he does not have a problem with weapons used to hunt or weapons used in self-defense.
