CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) -- A Charleston police officer, and the passenger riding in his cruiser, were hospitalized following a crash downtown Sunday night. Officials say the crash happened at the corner of East Bay Street and Columbus Street in Charleston just before 6:15 p.m.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the crash. They say the officer was traveling along East Bay Street when 21-year-old Christopher Hart disregarded a red light.

The police cruiser was hit by Hart's Ford SUV. Christopher Hart, who was not injured in the crash, has been charged with disregarding traffic signal.

32-year-old Officer Jeremy Davidson and 30-year-old passenger Matthew Greenlea were transported to MUSC with unknown injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Officials say speed was not a factor in the crash.
