While the PGA Championship isn't until a few more weeks, volunteers are already prepping for the big event. Celebrating its 94th year, the PGA will for the first time take place in South Carolina at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.More >>
HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCIV) – Golf fans have descended on the Lowcountry to watch the pros compete at the PGA championship. For a group of guys from Washington D.C., it meant a road trip to play a few rounds of golf while seeing how the pros tackle the Kiawah's courses.
"Three guys in a car just traveling south hitting golf courses along the way having great dinners telling some great stories along the way," Alan Kasper said.
It is a time to bond both on and off the course for the group that played at the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood Monday.
"The restaurants are fantastic and the history is unbelievable. And this course, seeing the old cannons and old railroads from Revolutionary and Civil wars right at your feet as you're teeing off is just unbelievable."
Local golf courses across Charleston have seen an increase in business. Tee-times are booking up fast at Stono Ferry said manager Greg Wood.
"We've had quite a number of calls from people this past weekend through today wanting to play golf," he said. "Most folks who go to watch golf after a few hours want to go play themselves."
Wood hopes to see the momentum carry out the remainder of the week and maybe even next. As of Monday they already had more course times scheduled than what they normally do during one of their busiest weeks.
"We didn't know what to anticipate with people coming but we were under the assumption that our business was going to grow and that's coming true."
Another group of guys from Rockford Illinois were also on the course. They have traveled on golf outings like this one for the past 25 years.
"This is just heaven right now with the conditions of the courses. It's just beautiful there are just so many great courses here in Charleston," Dave Kloepfer said.
