While the PGA Championship isn't until a few more weeks, volunteers are already prepping for the big event. Celebrating its 94th year, the PGA will for the first time take place in South Carolina at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.More >>
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) - It's really amazing to think that 12 years ago Tommy Gainey was a cart attendant at Dunes West Golf Course in Mount Pleasant. It's not too amazing to those that were close to him those days that Gainey is now playing in a major here in the Lowcountry.
"It's amazing, to where he's at and where he came from. He did it the hard way. He earned it. A lot of people follow him because he's earned it." says Dunes West Head Pro Kevin Zemnickas.
"It's awesome, I haven't been back to Dunes West in a long time, good to see some of those familiar faces around here." says Gainey who hails from Bishopville and lives in Camden.
As for the major, who knows what can happen if Gainey gets hot.
"I'm healthy and when you're healthy you've got a shot. Anybody has a shot, it's glory's last shot. You have to expect you're going to make it to a major. If you're going to be a contender out here you've got to feel like you can win and I feel confident saying that," he said.
With his past, you can't discount Tommy Gainey following his dreams.
