BERKELEY COUNTY (WCIV) – What neighbors call a long-awaited traffic is going up in a busy Berkeley County intersection.
Crews were working on the installation of the light Wednesday on Cane Bay Boulevard and Highway 176. Neighbors say they've been experiencing major traffic and many accidents and called for a light.
Dave Williams, who lives in Del Webb, one of the nearby communities, got many people involved.
"We got a calling campaign together, got a couple other neighborhoods involved," Williams said.
South Carolina Department of Transportation officials had said a light would be up by the first day of school.
"Looks like they're sticking to their word. Right now as we speak they're putting the wiring up," Williams said.
The new Cane Bay Middle School is expected to open with more than 400 students. Neighbors were already bracing for the extra traffic, but Williams says the light will help.
DOT officials say the contractor installing the permanent light fixture if waiting on materials but they expect it to be up around September.
