KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The PGA fan experience started bright and early for many. Traffic heading onto the island and at the course was expected to pick up and it did.

The bark may been worse than the bite for those expecting bumper to bumper and red light back ups.

Traffic has picked up quite a bit in the last two days but we expected that and of course the weather held the traffic down," said Captain Jim Woods with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. "But today's a nice clear day.. folks are coming out."

The ticket to success for the drive to Kiawah was to expect delays at the major intersections and the roundabout near the island. Once on the property, follow the crowds and follow these simple steps

"Make sure you bring individual bottle of water cuz' it's hot," said PGA fan Chris Harley. He drove in all the way from Orangeburg. "Bring sunscreen and prepare for the sun."

The PGA  does allow one bottle of water per fan and kids under 17 get in free.

It was a 5 a.m. wake up call for Josh Zielenbach and his dad. They drove in from Savannah.

"I'm surprised how calm it was in terms of the wind," said Tim Zielenbach. "It  was bloody hot but that is life."

Even Governor Nikki Haley made a stop for the event.

"This is where we bring CEO's together," she said. "This is where we bring companies to say thank you. This is where we bring CEO's to say this is who we are and this is what we are about and there's no better place to network, do business and see the quality of life in South Carolina than at a sporting event in South Carolina."

The governor and her family will stay in town through the duration of the tournament before heading home.
