Beaufort High requires safety course to park

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Students who want to park at Beaufort High this year will not only have to pay $15 for a permit but also must complete a defensive driving course.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Friday the $35 course teaches students the dangers of distracted driving, and anyone who wants a parking permit must complete it first.

Principal Corey Murphy says the course teaches students to respond to the pressures and distractions of driving.

One parent complained that, with the course, it would cost almost $100 for her two children to park. The school says the fee will be waived for those who need financial aid.

The course has also been required at Hilton Head High for several years. The initial controversy there has since died down.
