CONWAY, S.C. (WCIV) – Coastal Carolina University professor Dr. Daniel Cross Turner has written a book, "Southern Crossings: Poetry, Memory, and the Transcultural South," recently released by the University of Tennessee Press.

It is a study of southern poets from 1950-present and addresses the work of more than fifteen poets. Dr. Turner believes that contemporary Southern poetry is under appreciated, yet important as a way to preserve the south's diverse histories

"They are wonderful poets and that's really what drew me to this – the level of poets in the south," Turner said on Lowcountry Live.

Six of the poets featured in Turner's book have won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and four have been appointed U.S. Poet Laureate.

"The book connects each poet's style and subject matter to a way of remembering the Southern past, such as nostalgia, trauma and countermemory," said Turner.

Turner is an assistant professor of English and earned a Ph.D. in English from Vanderbilt University. His articles have been published in edited collections as well as prominent scholarly journals such as Mosaic, Genre and Southern Quarterly.

The book is available from the University of Tennessee Press as well as online booksellers.
