CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Mount Pleasant couple has pleaded guilty to homicide by child neglect in the starvation death of their nine-month-old son.
Charles Lewis Gordon IV and his wife Ashley entered the pleas in Charleston on Tuesday. They will be sentenced Thursday. The charge carries a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
Authorities say the couple's son Andrew was found starved to death in their home in June 2010. He was unresponsive in his crib in a room littered with bottles, soiled clothes and old food.
During the initial response officers reported Andrew's room was filthy and that the house smelled of urine and feces.
"His crib was stacked with soiled blankets and towels as well as several bottles of soured formula" said Chief Harry Sewell with the Mount Pleasant Police.
The child weighed just six pounds and nine ounces - almost two pounds less than when he was born.
