Local law firm donates to charity for teachers

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A local charity helping students and teachers in need got a big donation Thursday thanks to a local law firm.

Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook and Brickman donated $5,000 to the Teachers' Supply Closet as part of their 10 months of giving campaign.

The organization provides free school supplies to teachers who work at the 35 schools in the tri-county area where the majority of the students are in the free or reduced lunch program.

"Well, we all know how this economy is," said Deborah Halon at Teachers' Supply Closet. "Our students are suffering; our teachers are paying for supplies out of their own pockets. So we're providing a very important aspect of the learning process. If you don't have a pencil, you can't do your homework. If you don't have paper, you can't do your homework."

Halon says on average, teachers spend about $1,200 out-of-pocket on their classrooms and students every year. Each teacher who visits the Teachers' Supply Closet gets about $550 in supplies each time they visit.
