JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) – Two feral dogs have been captured on James Island but a handful of dogs are still out there. In a neighborhood off Camp Road, feral dogs killed a total of three cats on Thursday morning.

James Island resident Christy Price said she woke up Thursday morning to a frightening sound.

"I woke up about 4 o'clock hearing a pack of dogs barking," Christy Price said. "I had heard about the dogs running around the Island, and I was concerned about my cats so I jumped up and came outside."

Price said she then found her cat, Molly, torn to pieces by a pack of feral dogs.  The number of dogs in the pack was around ten to twelve and most of them were of German Shepherd or Labrador mix, according to Price.

"It was horrible. I will probably never get that image out of my mind. It was bad," Price said. "They were everywhere; they went up this road back that way."

Officials at the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said they are working on the feral dog issue and at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning trapped one feral dog in a ditch line along Ben Road. Officials said they are putting out traps in numerous areas of James Island.  They have caught a total of two feral dogs on James Island.

But it leaves little comfort for resident Christy Price, knowing there are many more feral dogs left out there.

"We did have an officer tell us that a bicyclist was chased last night by these dogs in this neighborhood and so if people aren't too concerned about cats hopefully they are concerned about people," Price said.

Charleston County Sheriff Office officials advise residents on James Island to keep their pets inside at night and to keep all trash cans covered to reduce scavenging by feral dogs.

If you spot the roaming dogs or have any incidents with them, you are asked to call the Charleston County Sheriff's office at (843) 202-1700.
