JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Animal Control say they captured a third feral dog on James Island Friday.

According to Maj. James Brady with the CCSO, the dog set off a trap on Ben Road.

"The dog appears to be part of the feral pack of dogs roaming on the island that are believed to be responsible for several cat deaths over the last few months," Maj Brady said in a release. "The tan male dog appears to be approximately five to six months old and matches the description of dogs who have been reported in the pack."

Brady says the dog will be taken to the ASPCA where they will decide on the dog's status.

Brady also reports that deputies responded to two homes for reports of cats being killed by the dogs. He says Charleston County deputies and Animal Control deputes have stepped up patrols in the area and are working with Charleston City Police Animal Control to address the issue of the feral dogs as both jurisdictions have had cases involving the pack of dogs and cat deaths attributed to the dogs.

He advises that residents who see roaming dogs or having any contact or incidents with any dogs are urged to contact the Charleston County Sheriff's Office at 843-202-1700 immediately and are advised to not to try and corral or capture the dogs themselves.

He also asks residents to keep all trash cans covered to reduce scavenging by the dogs and to not leave food for cats or dogs on porches or in yards.
