CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – BEGIN WITH BOOKS is the Charleston County affiliate of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, the country music star's free books-by-mail program for pre-school children.

The local mission is to create readers and "succeeders" in Charleston County by enrolling all children under four-years-old and to expand zip code by zip code. Children receive a new book every month, hopefully learning to love books.

"We enroll children and once they are in the computer their books magically come each month," said co-director Janet Segal.

BEGIN WITH BOOKS aims to ensure that all Charleston County children are prepared for kindergarten and elementary school by planting early seeds of literacy. According to Segal, children who read do better in school and do better in life. BEGIN WITH BOOKS inspires young children with a love of reading and the potential for succeeding.

The group is an all-volunteer organization currently shipping more than 900 books per month directly to homes. It is working on expansion into the 29403 zip code and is looking for business, organizations and individuals from that region to help.
