JAMES ISLAND (WCIV)--A bicyclist died after a crash with a car on James Island.  It happened Friday night around 9:30 p.m. on Riverland Drive near Charleston County Park.

The Deputy Coroner for Charleston County says the victim is 40-year-old Matthew Denton of James Island. Denton died at the scene from blunt force injuries he sustained from being hit.

Deputies say they arrested and charged 46-year-old Jeffery Lewis Thomas of Mount Pleasant, with Leaving the Scene of an Accident resulting in death.

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say it was determined that after striking the bicycle, Thomas got out and checked on the bicyclist, then left the scene traveling to West Ashley and returned to the scene approximately 30 to 40 minutes later.

Thomas is a Deputy Law Enforcement Officer with the SC Department of Natural Resources, and was transported to the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.  A Bond Hearing was scheduled for Thomas 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
