USCPD: Freshman from Walterboro caught with 5 guns in dorm

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) - A Freshman student from Walterboro was caught with five guns in his dorm room Wednesday according to University of South Carolina Police Department officials.

A 17-year-old student admitted that he had brass knuckles and firearms in his room when approached by campus police, states the police report.

According to the report, a resident informed an RA Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. of a student in room 214 of Maxcy residence hall that may have had guns.

Campus police say they stopped the student outside of his room and conducted a frisk search due to the nature of the call. The report states that the 17-year-old had a pocket knife in his pocket.

Police say the 17-year-old cooperated with a search of the room where they found five guns inside a green bag in the closet.

According to police, the student was placed under arrest for unlawful possession of a firearm on school property.

"We are pleased to see that the programs and processes we have in place worked as they should to recognize and address unlawful activity," said Dennis Pruitt, vice president for student affairs, in a press release from the University. "Our bystander program worked and law enforcement was notified. Officers responded quickly and handled the matter appropriately, and our housing and student affairs staff has mobilized to provide counseling or other services to those students who request them."

University officials say the student was released from Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $20,000 surety bond. Officials say he has been suspended from USC and is restricted from returning to campus or contacting students, faculty or staff as a condition of his suspension and bond.
