CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV)- One lucky park in Charleston is set to score a big-time renovation to its basketball courts, thanks to Coca Cola and Piggly Wiggly's Sprite Spark Parks initiative.
Sprite Spark Parks is part of the Coca Cola Company's nationwide 2-million dollar effort to restore places where teens and their families can get out and get active outdoors.
Three Charleston parks are in the running to win $15,000 in renovations: Martin Park, Deming Park, and Willie Gaines Playground.
Online voting to determine which of the three parks will win, is underway. The polls will close September 3030th.
Representatives from Coca Cola and Piggly Wiggly Carolina, along with the College of Charleston men's and women's head basketball coaches, tipped off the initiative at a press conference in Martin Park Wednesday.
Mayor Joe Riley, Charleston Director of Parks Laurie Yarbrough, and State Representative Wendell Gilliard were in attendance. They say the initiative will help South Carolina battle the childhood obesity epidemic.
"As we fight obesity on a national level, I'm proud to be here, representing the state of South Carolina. Knowing where we are when it comes to obesity in the state, this program here is much needed," Gilliard said.
According to the CDC website, 12.8 percent of children aged 2 to 5 are obese. 16.7 percent of adolescents are obese, and 31.5 percent of adults are obese in the state of South Carolina.
