Congressional staffers tour SC military bases

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Staffers from several South Carolina congressional House and Senate offices are touring military sites in the Low Country so backers can show off their best points in advance of potential federal budget cuts.

Blakely Williams of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce says Thursday's visit is designed to highlight the importance of the sites to the nation's defense.

The group visits Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot on Parris Island and the Naval Hospital in Beaufort.

Staffers on the tour work with Sens. Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham, and Reps. Tim Scott, James Clyburn, Trey Gowdy and Mick Mulvaney. The potential cuts are due in January as part of a $1.2 trillion deficit-cutting plan.
