CHARLESTON, S.C. - (WCIV) Some Lowcountry healthcare providers were honored Monday for their service to veterans.

The Department of Defense Volunteer Organization and the National Guard and Reserve have honored businesses since 1996 with awards called the Defense Employer Support Freedom Award and the Patriot Award.

Two employees at East Cooper Medical Center were honored with the Patriot Award for their help to a co-worker whose husband was deployed overseas.

"I actually have family that's been in the military for quite some time, and I know some of the sacrifices that are made by these people," said manager for women's services Cindi Powell who received an award Monday.
