CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – The Charleston County Public Library has launched its ‘One Book Charleston County' program. This is an effort to spark the community to read, discuss and attend events related to one book.

This year's book is "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer. This is about nine-year-old Oskar Schell's coping process after the 9/11 attacks.

"He's dealing with the grieving process. He loses his father in the attacks," Outreach Librarian Michel Hammes said on Lowcountry Live.

Oskar finds a key which begins a journey into unlocking the door to others going through similar recovery processes. The book was made into a movie starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock.

The library has planned special programs, exhibits, discussions and movie showings about the book. More than 600 copies of the book are available to be checked out. It is also available for downloading. Book Club kits are also available.

There will be a teenage scavenger hunt throughout the country with photos from the book as well as a "Keys of Thanks" exhibit honored local first responders.

"We have some wonderful programs dealing with the themes in the books," Hammes said.
