Flood advisories released across Lowcountry

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has released a flood advisory.

The following was released by Capt. Eric Watson with the CCSO:

"Due to the recent heavy downfall of rain in the Charleston County area, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office is reporting minor to moderate road flooding in the following areas: Flooding is being reported on Savannah Highway near Highway 526, Dorchester Road at Meeting Street Road, and parts of Azalea Drive between Cosgrove Avenue and Leeds Avenue.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is asking motorist to use extreme caution while traveling on the roadways. There will be extra patrols in the James Island and West Ashley area to monitor road conditions. Currently, there are no reports of road closures at this time."

 

Charleston City Police also advised the following streets are flooded and motorists should try to avoid these areas: The Market, Morrison and East Bay, Morrison and Meeting, Rutledge and the Crosstown, King and John and portions of Gadsden, Bennett, Wentworth, Beaufain, Broad, Ashley and Pitt.

One of our crew members tells us East Bay St. is shut down heading towards downtown at Wentworth.

CPD also reports Bull and Barre, Huger and King, the 61 and US17 split, Cannon and President, Hagood and Horizon, Fishburne and King, Romney and East Bay, Wentworth and Coming, Pitt and Beaufain, Broad and Chisolm, Market and Meeting to Concord, Ashley and Bennet, Gadsden and Bennet, Gadsden and Wentworth, Skylark and Hwy 7, skylark and hiway 17, 526 at Hwy 17 and Hwy 7 are flooded at this time.

Around 3:30 p.m., CPD officals announced police were no longer diverting motorists from using the Cosgrove Avenue 216 Exit to the downtown area. Motorists will be diverted from using the Rutledge Avenue exit off of I-26 to the downtown area and they must exit I-26 at the Meeting Street exit.

At 5 pm CPD had this update: Motorists can use Meeting, King, Broad, Lockwood, Morrison Drive/East Bay to Calhoun north, Coming/Beaufain north can be used to leave the city of Charleston. Please avoid the Crosstown until further notice.

At almost 7 p.m. it was announced that Rutledge Ave. was clear as well as the Crosstown at Rutledge.

The Town of Mount Pleasant also made a statement:

Due to extremely heavy rainfall, many roads in Mount Pleasant are flooded. Please use caution while traveling. After your rain event, please report your localized flooding area to the Public Services, Stormwater Division at (843) 856-2157.

In North Charleston, the following roads are closed due to high water:

  • Noisette Blvd from Virginia to Turnbull
  • Viaduct @ Hobson Ave

All other previously closed roads in North Charleston have been opened. Some standing water may be on these roads so caution is still advised.
