CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Thanks to severe flooding in the downtown area, multiple cancellations have been announced from several schools and organizations.
The Citadel has announced that classes are canceled due to severe weather and flooding.
"With bad weather projected to continue today and high tide occurring at about 6 p.m., all classes beginning at 4 p.m. and after have been canceled," said Charlene Gunnells with the Citadel. "Employees and visitors to campus are asked to use caution due to significant flooding on and around campus."
Trident Technical College also canceled classes that started at 1:30pm at their downtown PalmerCampus. Classes at all other campuses and sites will be held as scheduled. At this time, TTC classes are scheduled to be held at their normal times on Wednesday.
The Charleston County School District made no changes for the weather. According to spokesperson Jason Sakran:
"We realize that many streets and roads across the county are closed so please let parents know they should expect delays and we will have staff remain at the schools after official dismissal to ensure all students return home safely. Their child will be safe and supervised by a caring adult until they arrive. No child will be left unattended. Again, all CCSD schools are operating under a normal schedule at this time and all students are safe."
They later updated, saying all after school athletic events and practices are canceled but that Kaleidoscope after school programs are NOT canceled today and will be operating on a normal schedule.
The Art Institute of Charleston also canceled classes and will be closed for the rest of the Tuesday. Classes resume at 6 am on Wednesday, August 29, 2012. For more information, check the college website www.artinstitutes.edu/charleston or call the main number at 1.866.211.0107.
Other cancellations/closings announced:
--The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry closes at 4 p.m. and will reopen at 9 a.m. Wed.
--The Charleston Baptist Pre-school open house has been postponed until Thursday night.
--The Charleston RiverDogs postponed tonight's baseball game against the West Virginia Power. The RiverDogs will play the Power in a doubleheader on Wednesday in two 7-inning games that begin at 5:05 pm. Gates open at 4 pm.
--The College of Charleston canceled all classes beginning at 5 PM and later. Classes will resume a normal schedule on Wednesday morning.
--The Charleston School of Law has canceled all classes and school activities after 5 p.m. today due to severe weather. Classes will resume Wednesday as scheduled.
