Baby shower honors female veterans

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Veterans in the Lowcountry who are expecting a new arrival can get some help from the local VA hospital.

Officials at the Ralph H. Johnson Medical Center held a baby shower Thursday afternoon for pregnant veterans or veterans who will soon give birth.

The shower was held to give the women clothing and other supplies for their children.

"To see other mothers here and hear their different experiences, and you kind of compare notes," said Melyne Carson, an Air Force veteran. "You kind of compare notes. It's like a little support system."

Information also was available to veterans regarding government maternity benefits.

While today's event was the first of its kind in Charleston, more are planned in the future.
