UPDATE: Shellfish harvesting area 8 back open after sewage spill
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Shellfish harvesting area 8 has now reopened. Officials at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control announced Saturday morning that area 8 is safe and open for commercial harvesters and dealers.
Several shellfish harvesting areas had been closed because of a sewage spill on Rifle Range Road on Tuesday. Rifle Range Road northbound near Seaside Farms was closed Tuesday through Thursday. Heavy rain and flooding Tuesday led to a water main break in Mount Pleasant that spilled nearly half a million gallons of sewage in the area.
Mount Pleasant Waterworks and DHEC had been cleaning up the spill since Tuesday, and completed cleaning the spill on Friday afternoon. DHEC officials say they will continue to monitor the situation.
Shellfish harvesting areas 9A, 12A and 12B still remained closed.
