Community rallies around families of Berkeley County murder victims

Posted: Updated:

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- The community has promised to continue fundraising for the families of the murdered women.

A car wash was held Monday in Moncks Corner just two days after two arrests were made in the murders of 18-year-old Dana Marie Woods and 22-year-old June Guerry.

Caleb Matlock and Arthur Chavis are accused of shooting both women and leaving their bodies in the national forest last week.

The two men are said to be cousins.

A friend of Dana's mother says she's trying to make sense of it all.

"She's at home trying to heal trying to find answers where there are none," Stephanie Lewis said.

This was the third fundraiser that the community has put on since their murders.

"The support has just been amazing and we just appreciate every body coming out and helping," Lewis said.

The fundraiser will help cover funeral expenses for both families. Organizers say people came out from all over the Lowcountry.

"I just felt heartfelt for the family. It could happen to anybody so I felt the need to come out and support them. It's really sad," Cathy Mills said.

Investigators have still not released a motive for the murders.
