NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - North Charleston police say they arrested a man who is responsible for an attempted armed robbery at the Remount Road Rite Aid Sunday afternoon.

According to police, Marion Mitchum III jumped on the pharmacy counter with a knife Sunday afternoon around 2:40 p.m. and demanded Oxycontin and Oxycodone.

The pharmacist behind the counter said she did not have access to the pills, so the suspect made the same demand to an associate nearby, according to police.

Police say a customer picked up a walking stick and began swinging it at the subject until he fled the store.

According to police, Mitchum had a driver who had no knowledge of the attempted robbery occurring.  Captain Scott Deckard says the driver was interviewed by police and there was no indication he had knowledge of the incident until police contacted him.

Witnesses obtained a description of the vehicle and license plate, and officers were able to stop Mitchum in Hanahan later and take him into custody, according to police.

North Charleston Police officials say Mitchum is charged with attempted armed robbery.
