FCC commissioner in SC discussing digital divide

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Federal Communications Commission head Mignon Clyburn is visiting South Carolina as part of efforts to close the digital divide.

Clyburn is the daughter of U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn. She joins state and local elected officials in Charleston on Friday as Comcast Executive Vice President David Cohen presents a foundation grant to continue efforts to help close the divide in the city.

The Internet Essentials program introduced in Charleston last year works to help low-income families meet the costs of acquiring computers and broadband service. It also helps educate folks in using computers.

The digital divide refers to the gulf between those who have access to computers and internet service and those who don't. Many of those who don't are in poorer communities.
