Pinewood Prep students commemorate 9/11 with special ceremony

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) - Students and teachers at Pinewood Preparatory School held their own ceremony Tuesday morning to remember 9/11.

They gathered in the school's Frances J. Suddeth Josephson Liberty Garden, which is home to a 9/11 medallion. It is a piece of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center.

The ceremony featured the playing of Taps, the reading of a poem and a moment of silence.

"The poem basically represents how we are united and just remembers that we came together with such strong community and togetherness that it was really empowering and this poem, I think, embodies that," said Pinewood Prep senior Jeremy Gray.

Local first responders also participated in the ceremony.

"It's important for us to stop what we're doing and come together and remember much like our ancestors did following December 7, 1945." said Doug Warren, Dorchester County EMS Director.

After the ceremony, each student shook the hands of all of the first responders.

"It is refreshing to see that the next generation appreciates community service, appreciates public service and understands the importance of the events of the past," said Warren.

This is the tenth year for the ceremony.
