LADSON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A spokesperson for the Berkeley County School District has confirmed that Sangaree elementary and intermediate schools were on lockdown temporarily for a "community event" at the suggestion of law enforcement.

While other outlets are reporting that there was a shooting in the area involving a vehicle, the spokesperson for the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, Dan Moon, says it was all over a guy with a BB gun.

Moon says around 7:40 a.m., a man was firing a BB gun in a trailer park near the school and in an overabundance of caution, the school went on lockdown, which is standard procedure.

Moon said Brandon Richards was arrested and charged with malicious injury to animals, personal property

Susan Haire with the BCSO stressed that the students were never in any danger.

"The teachers kept on teaching and the students kept on learning," she said. "No one came in or out of our buildings."

Haire says the lockdown was lifted by 8:30 a.m. Moon says schools were only on lockdown for about five minutes. One person is in custody. No one was injured.
