Posted: Updated:

AWENDAW, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston County Sheriff's Deputies say the accident that occurred in the area of Steed Creek Road in Awendaw early Sunday afternoon was not fatal, but the victim later succumbed to life-threatening injuries.

Deputies say one person was entrapped in the accident at 12:20 p.m. Sunday.  The car overturned in the wood line off of the highway opposite Steed Creek Road.

The coroner identified the victim as 53-year-old Charles Melbert from McClellanville. His cause of death has not been released.

Editor's note: CCSO officials initially reported on Sunday the accident as fatal, then sent a correction that Mr. Melbert was still alive. The coroner confirmed on Monday that he did, indeed, pass away.
