CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Margaret M.R. Eastman, known as Peg to her local friends, is a Charleston native. Her family dates back to the state's early settlers.

Eastman's interest in local history spans many years with special emphasis on Charleston's cultural heritage.

Eastman's most recent book, "Hidden History of Civil War Charleston," tells powerful stories from the 1860's that simply are not told frequently in modern society.

"It was very painful for many generations," Eastman said on Lowcountry Live. "People hated to learn about it, but they did write about it."

There are stories about the sinking of the Stone Fleet whaling ships, the Swamp Angel and the Levy Sisters.

Eastman is holding a talk about "Hidden History of Civil War Charleston" at the Charleston Library Society on September 27 at 6:30pm.
