Man charged in Gabrielle Swainson abduction now faces federal charges

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A man accused of abducting a Columbia teen who has been missing for a month is now facing a federal indictment.

Federal prosecutors say 52-year-old Freddie Grant was indicted Wednesday for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

Last month, Grant was charged with kidnapping Gabrielle Swainson after the missing teen's blood was found on duct tape near his home. Authorities have said Grant had dated the 15-year-old's mother and had done yard work for her.

State prison records show Grant served prison time on drug charges in the 1990s. Federal authorities searching his home earlier this year say they found .38-caliber bullets and shells for a 12-gauge shotgun.

Grant is scheduled to appear in federal court in October. His federal attorney did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
