MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials will not release audio recordings of phone calls made to 911 during a standoff Tuesday in which a man was shot and killed by police.

The incident is being investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division.

A spokesman for the Mount Pleasant Police Department, which handled the standoff on Wappetaw Place in the Parish Place subdivision, said Thursday he had spoken to SLED officials, who did not object to releasing the recordings.

"However, at this time any premature release of the recordings may compromise the ongoing investigations, and we recognize our responsibility to ensure the necessity of fairness to all involved parties," Maj. Stan Gragg said in an email.

Richard Cathcart III, 60, was shot by officers several times after he left his home Tuesday afternoon. Investigators said Cathcart threatened officers with a handgun.

He was later pronounced dead at MUSC.
