NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – North Charleston police have arrested a former police officer after an investigation of "official misconduct."

An official with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed back in July that they were investigating North Charleston police Officer Kenneth Jerome Ford.

Kathryn Richardson, SLED Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Information Coordinator, says the request for the investigation was submitted by North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt on July 20.

North Charleston Police Department Public Information Officer Spencer Pryor says at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, "a citizen contacted the North Charleston Police Department to report an incident of misconduct by Officer Kenneth Ford." Pryor says Officer Ford was then terminated July 23.

According to an affidavit from bond court, Ford is accused of taking a man, identified as William Waddy, into custody, assaulting him and telling the man "This is what happens when you disrespect the police."

The affidavit says Ford arrested Waddy on West Montague Avenue. but then took him to another darker location while another cop followed. After the assault, the affidavit states Ford let Waddy go and told him to find his own way home.

Then, on July 18 around 1 a.m., a witness told investigators that Ford sent the second officer a text asking him to lie about where they had taken Waddy.

Bond was set at $25,000.
