CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Authorities have taken several calls from area residents claiming to have seen a red Chrysler Sebring mentioned in an Amber Alert, officials said Tuesday.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Divsion issued the alert Monday night. In it, authorities say Abigale Lefevers, 12, might be traveling with 38-year-old Timothy Newman.

Authorities said the pair might be traveling south on U.S. 17 from North Carolina.

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday they had received several calls from people claiming to have seen the car. Sightings have been reported along many different areas of U.S. 17.

However, the car has not been located, officials said.

SLED issued a news release late Tuesday that said Abigale and Newman might be in the Myrtle Beach area. Newman is "very knowledgeable" about coastal waterways and could be hiding in marinas or on a boat, officials said.

Also, SLED officials said, Newman has experience as a truck driver and might be driving back roads to avoid major highways.

Abigale is a white girl with green eyes and shoulder-length brown hair, according to SLED. She is 5-feet 4-inches tall, weighs about 90 pounds and was last seen at 128 McNeil Road in Newport, N.C.

She might be traveling in a red 1998 Chrysler Sebring convertible with a North Carolina license plate (AKT 6534).

The man driving the car is Newman. He is described as a white man with brown eyes and short, brown hair.

Newman is 5-feet 8-inches tall and weighs approximately 210 pounds. Investigators told the Associated Press Abigale had been communicating with Newman in recent weeks.

According to the North Carolina Sex Offender registry, Newman has been a registered sex offender since 2005 for an offence that happened in 2003. He spent two years and three months in prison before his release in October 2005.

The registry also lists a tattoo of a Harley Davidson symbol on his right arm as a distinguishing mark.

The Associated Press reports Abigale's father told deputies she was missing when he woke up around 6:30 a.m. Monday and that Newman was last seen around 10 p.m. Sunday. The AP also says Newman did not report for work on Monday.
