Horse escapes pen, is struck and killed

Posted: Updated:

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- A horse belonging to a man at the center of an animal abuse case earlier this year was struck and killed on a Berkeley County roadway Sunday.

The horse, which was owned by Dwight McCloud, escaped from its pen and was struck by an SUV on Old Dairy Road just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol officials.

In April, McCloud was fined nearly $5,500 for abusing horses in his care.

McCloud pleaded guilty to two counts of failure to provide human care and treatment to an animal, one count of failure to provide adequate food and water and two counts of failure to provide treatment to a sick or injured animal.

Cpl. Bob Beres of the highway patrol said the SUV was traveling east on Old Dairy Road when it struck the horse.

The highway patrol is investigating the crash.
