CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)—Repairs are finally underway at Joseph Floyd Manor in downtown Charleston.
During a strong storm back in Feb. 2010, a portion of the side of the building was blown away. The Charleston County Housing Authority quickly responded by covering the hole with a blue tarp and filing an insurance claim.
But more than two years later, the eyesore remained on the building that is home to hundreds of low income Charleston residents.
State Rep. Wendell Gilliard has been keeping an eye on the project and says it all comes down to a matter of pride for these residents who want to take pride in their living space.
"They take this personal because they take care of their living quarters and they wanted to take pride in the building itself," Gilliard explained. "I called it a sore sight to see… but they finally decided to do something about it-- and what that does-- is bring a sense of pride. in the residents of Joseph Floyd and I'm very proud of that."
But the wait is over. Renovations finally began Tuesday, and are expected to be completed in late November.
