About 1,600 American Airlines employees have taken an early retirement option, the company announced today.

Spokesman Bruce Hicks said 1,595 employees covered by the company's agreements with Transportation Workers Union took an early retirement option.

The options were offered to employees as the struggling airline tries to emerge from bankruptcy.

The deadline for opting in the early out plan was this week.

Employees will being their retirement on a staggered schedule beginning in December.

The company did not release how many of the employees who took the option were based in Tulsa.  The number of employees who opted for early retirement will affect the number of people who will be laid off as part of the workforce reduction included in American's new contract with the union.
